Student Teaching

Thornell Road Elementary

Grade 1| Kente Cloth

Students will create a piece of work inspired by African Kente Cloth after reading “The Spider Weaver” by Margaret Misgrove and Julia Carins, focusing on pattern, warm and cool colors, and learning to break up a space with line and shapes.
Grade 2| Emotional Masks

Students will create a mask with an expression using oil pastels that is inspired by Japanese or African masks, showing understanding of geometric shapes, basic color theory (primary, secondary, complementary colors) and the technique mixing colors with oil pastel.

Grade 4| My Bedroom

Students will create a representation of their bedroom using perspective, showing different textures of objects in the room based on Vincent Van Goghs' The Bedroom. Objects in the room are consciously chosen to be able to convey a story (narration) of the person who lives there. The student will then switch artwork with another student (in a different class) and have to make up a story about using clues from the image of the room they have received.

Grade 5| Pop Art Pets

Students will create a portrait of their pet using oil pastel that conveys understanding of implied texture and complementary colors, by using a grid structure based on their understanding of Pop Art Color demonstraited by Andy Warhol. Students also looked at current artists: Corina St Martin, and Alicia Vannoy.
